What Just Happened?

I very seldom repost a guest article in its entirety. However, this piece by Jeff Lyle, posted November 4, reflects my thoughts on the election completely. Jeff hosts Transforming Truth to offer relevant Bible teaching that seeks to separate the opinion of man from the revelation of God. His website with further insights is https://jefflyle.com. I believe Jeff captures the truth of what just happened.

Very little of what I desired, what I prayed for, and what I had hoped would occur took place last night. The blue wave crashed hard. Yet, one of the primary anchors of my theology is the sovereignty of God, so I awoke today with deep disappointment but zero despair. I believe what happened in the elections is going to bear some terrible consequences which will begin quickly and escalate rapidly. America has swallowed a poisonous pill while ignoring the long list of detrimental side effects that will manifest in short order. I conclude that last night’s election results will prove to be a form of God’s judgment on this nation.

Why do I believe this is true?

The strongest biblical foundation for this idea is Romans 1:24–28, where God’s judgment is expressed by giving people over to their own desires, along with Psalm 81:11–12, where God allows His people to follow their own counsel. One of the most sobering forms of divine judgment in Scripture is not when God refuses to give people what they want, but when He allows them to have precisely what they have demanded. This is often referred to as “judicial hardening.” Romans 1 describes a people who rejected God’s truth and were subsequently given over to their own unholy and destructive desires. God gave them what they wanted and no longer resisted them. This was judgment of them. Psalm 81:12, as pictured in the graphic, records God saying, “So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels.” There comes a point when the greatest consequence of a nation’s rebellion may be that God permits its people to experience the fruit of their own choices. I don’t wish to be dramatic, but neither do I want to be vague: the judgment of God is frequently displayed by Him giving foolish rebels exactly what they desire.

As I consider last night’s election results, I cannot escape this biblical warning. I am sickened (but not surprised) by what our nation’s political choices reveal about our spiritual condition. Elections are not merely jousts for political power; they always expose the convictions, priorities, and appetites of a people. We should be cautious about overstating what all of God’s hidden purposes are in the outcome of the elections, but we should be equally cautious about assuming that Him giving America what she wanted is somehow evidence of His approval of the election results. His permitting the blue wave is not His endorsement of the associated policies.

Sometimes the most frightening words God can speak to a rebellious people are simply, “Have it your way.”

For all the Christians who chose not to express our shared biblical convictions via the ballot box, you will have much to think about in time to come. My own conscience is clear, and my heart is steadfast. I am armored up today.
